WHAT IS THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME?

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is a diagnosis to describe pinched nerves and blood vessels around the neck or shoulder. These blood vessels and nerves lie in a tunnel called “the Thoracic Outlet”. This tunnel runs from the neck to the shoulder. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome occurs when tight “knotted” muscles begin to put pressure on these nerves and blood vessels. When this happens, a person may feel numbness, tingling, burning, cold hands or aching pain in the shoulders or arms.

HOW CAN YOU GET THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME?

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome can happen when the shoulders, head or neck are in strained positions for prolonged periods. Therefore, those who have poor ergonomics, poor posture, constantly reach overhead, or constantly strain their necks and shoulders are at greatest risk. In some cases, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome can occur from a traumatic event like an automobile accident.

WILL THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME JUST GO AWAY?

The symptoms of Thoracic Outlet may persist or worsen if posture or ergonomics are not corrected or work activities are not modified. In mild to moderate cases of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, oral or injected medication may be prescribed to help inflammation and pain. Medication may provide only partial or temporary relief, so other treatment options should also be considered.

Physical Therapy is also commonly prescribed for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. When done with the proper exercises this may provide beneficial results

HOW WE MAY HELP

At Lakes Region Chiropractic, we will conduct an examination to determine if your symptoms are related to Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Our primary goals are to 1) Diagnose the underlying cause of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome 2) offer natural treatment options that address both the cause and symptoms of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, and 3) educate patients on ways to improve their overall health and wellbeing. Specifically, we utilize a combination of chiropractic and rehabilitative medicine which may improve your condition without the use of drugs or surgery. A procedure that is used in the treatment of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is called Myofascial Release Technique (MRT). This treatment is used to help relax shortened overworked muscles that are irritating nerves. We also apply chiropractic adjustments to joints that have lost their normal mobility. Chiropractic adjustments may help improve joint mobility and reduce inflammation, thus, allowing injured areas to heal better. Personalized exercises specific to your condition will be prescribed as part of your continued therapy. They help strengthen and support weak areas and are designed to be done comfortably at home. During treatment we will advise you on developing healthy lifestyle habits and avoiding activities that may be aggravate your condition. As treatment progresses, your condition will be closely monitored with regular progress reports and periodic re-evaluations
